Australia is no virgin when it comes to natural disasters but it is, and always will be, a horrible life-wrecking experience and the past few weeks have been no exception.
Currently Queensland, Australia is experiencing yet another hardship as flood waters continue to cover large quantities of land and engulf towns. The latest hit is Toomooba with server flash-flooding leaving the town facing Tsunami-like waters. According to some media sources the area of flooding in Queensland is equal to the size of New South Wales (and Australian state) flooded and the waters are spreading with flood warnings for New South Wales and Brisbane (Queensland’s capital city) issued recently.  (Here’s a map of Australia for those people who have NO idea what I mean when I say Queensland and New South Wales: www.travelnotes.org/1800/Austr…)

There are towns where the flooding is 9 or more metres high and houses where all that can be seen are the roofs. Rural and non-rural areas alike where families have not been able to get their pets out before the flooding and haven’t been able to see or feed their pets and life stock for days. One town, Dalby, has even been re-flooded after the original floodwaters subsided. The floods have largely come from rising rivers which have been aided by large rainfalls and the over-flowing of our dams which have not been these full in decades. Large export towns such as Rockhampton (known for its meat) have been flooded as well as Bundaberg which exports large amounts of sugar and Bundaberg Rum.

Many of the families affected by the flood are not covered by their insurance companies as their contracts cover flooding caused only by rain falling from the sky, not flooding from rising rivers. Towns watch as cars and even some homes are washed down main roads. Business owns have watched their livelihoods swept away. Famers have come back to their land to find their crops destroyed and many of their cattle dead. Miners and mine owners wait and watch as the floodwaters slowly recede. The floods, as off today, have caused over AUD$9 Billion and officially claimed two lives.

For those living near flooded towns food, clothes, and a warm place to sleep is always welcome.

Please donate. I know it’s a tough time for everyone worldwide, but the people caught in these floods now have nothing only the clothes on their backs and the small amount of items they were able to store in safe places before the floods peaked.
